Review of The Princess and the Fangirl by Ashley Poston

Read for: Recently Added. & I love Ashley Poston's writing

Synopsis: "The Prince and the Pauper gets a modern makeover in this adorable, witty, and heartwarming young adult novel set in the Geekerella universe by national bestselling author Ashley Poston.

Imogen Lovelace is an ordinary fangirl on an impossible mission: save her favorite character, Princess Amara, from being killed off from her favorite franchise, Starfield. The problem is, Jessica Stone—the actress who plays Princess Amara—wants nothing more than to leave the intense scrutiny of the fandom behind. If this year's ExcelsiCon isn't her last, she'll consider her career derailed.

When a case of mistaken identity throws look-a-likes Imogen and Jess together, they quickly become enemies. But when the script for the Starfield sequel leaks, and all signs point to Jess, she and Imogen must trade places to find the person responsible. That's easier said than done when the girls step into each other's shoes and discover new romantic possibilities, as well as the other side of intense fandom. As these "princesses" race to find the script-leaker, they must rescue themselves from their own expectations, and redefine what it means to live happily ever after."

My Review: I loved Geekerella when it came out, it had pulled me out of a reading slump with all it's adorable geekiness, so I was really excited for this one. I had a bit of a hard time getting into this story, I didn't really feel like I connected with the characters as much as I had in the first one. It did come together for me a little over half way through and I really became invested in the story. The statements made throughout the book about the way fandoms have a good and a not so good side, the way the mob mentality kicks in and attacks new actors and actresses cast in remakes of favorites or new branch off series/movies, really struck home. There is also the divides in fandoms between old and new fans, it is a shame to see but is so prevalent (even I have left most of the My Little Pony collecting communities due to this). I really appreciate the way these mentalities are pointed out in a eye opening yet enjoyable way. I have to say as much as I enjoyed the relationship and friendships that develop in this story, the one that really stands out to me is the sibling relationship between Imogen and Milo. All in all it took a bit to get into this one but I ended up really loving it.

My Rating: While it wasn't quite to the level of Geekerella (I might be a bit biased with that one) it was still a really great read and I love how it tackles issues within fandoms while still having that sense of unity.  I give it a rating of Four Paws!

  1. I'm sad that it wasn't as good as Geekerella, but I'm glad that it was still good. I didn't know there was a divide in the MLP fandom!
