Arrg-ust Bedtime Story: A Pirate's Guide to First Grade by James Preller

7684987
Read for: Arrgust & Children's Book Challenge

Synopsis: "Arr! It's the first day of first grade, and it's all hands on deck for a young pirate and his crew. How much trouble can they get into? What will they do at recess? And, most important, what treasure awaits them at school?"

My Review: Munchkin and I found this at the library and it was absolutely perfect, I am hosting Arrg-ust on my blog and Munchkin is starting 1st Grade this month. It was not exactly what I was expecting but it was entertaining. The little boy had some imaginary pirate friends that helped him through his first day of school with reminders and helpful tips all in the typical pirate way. Munchkin really liked the pirate talk and how none of the adults seemed to mind. It is a fun book to ease a new 1st grader into school if they are a fan of pirates!

My Rating: Even though Munchkin isn't a huge fan of Pirates, he still had a lot of fun with this book and it answered a lot of his questions about 1st grade.  We give it a rating of Three Paws and a Stump Wag!

Arrg-ust Review of Who Was Blackbeard by James Buckley Jr

Read for: Arrg-ust & Borrowed Books

Synopsis: "Though much of his early life remains a mystery, Blackbeard most likely began his life as Edward Teach in the sailing port of Bristol, England. He began his career as a hired British sailor during Queen Anne’s War. He eventually settled in the Bahamas under Captain Benjamin Hornigold who taught the young sailor to go "a-pirating." Soon enough, Blackbeard was commanding his own fleet and stealing ships around the Caribbean and up and down the Eastern seaboard. Known for his thick, black beard and fearsome reputation, the legend of Blackbeard has influenced pirate legend and lore for over 300 years."

My Review: I haven't read many of these Who Was books and they are a little advanced for Munchkin yet (equivalent to a level 4 maybe in the early reader books), but I really like that there are so many non-fiction books to choose from. This was a great book to pickup as part of my pirate month. Not only did we find out Blackbeard and how his legend came to be (and ended) but it also debunked several pirate myths as well as point out facts about them. It was very informative, but still enjoyable to read and had a lot of great illustrations.

My Review: I really appreciated this non-fiction book, it not only cleared up a lot of the misconceptions about Blackbeard but also pirates in general (apparently they generally didn't have enough treasure to bury and their 'treasure' was generally not gold either).  I give this a rating of Three Paws and a Stump Wag.

Bout of Books #23 Sign Up

I love Bout of Books Readathons and even though this next week is going to be insane with vacation and fantasy football drafts and long drives, flights and birthday and summer parties I am still going to do my best to participate.

Here is the information you need in case you want to sign up too!
The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda Shofner and Kelly Rubidoux Apple. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, August 20th and runs through Sunday, August 26th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 23 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. - From the Bout of Books team

So this post is going to be my base for the week, I will try to come back and update it every few days with my progress (as I already have a lot of posts planned for this week and don't want things too jumbled up).  I will also be updating on Instagram @EasternSunset9
