I cannot believe that 2018 is already over, I had so many more plans for the year and so many more books I wanted to read. The end of this year was a bit of a challenge for me, a week without reading really made my challenges take a hit but luckily most of my challenges were already complete. Shall we take a look back at my challenges and all the books read for them this last year? Beware this will be a long post!
Children's Book Challenge: COMPLETE
30 - 40 books - I definitely managed my goal in this challenge but it always tends to be an easy one. I would like to limit the number a lot more, especially since Munchkin is getting out of this reading phase. I do really love my Bedtime Story posts though so will continue to read these throughout the year.
Early Reader Challenge: COMPLETE
30-40 books - Again, this was a pretty easy challenge to complete though I would have liked to have read more of these with Munchkin than the picture books. In the future I would like these two challenges to be a little more even.
Graphic Novel Challenge: COMPLETE
23-28 books - This as always is a challenge that I try to control, it would be so easy to fly through a big stack of Graphic Novels. I am also finding it easier to read digital graphic novels so I look forward to reading more of these in the future through the library instead of purchasing.
Audio Book Challenge: COMPLETE
28-32 books - Okay the past couple of years I have been increasing the number of audio books I read but never did I expect to blow this challenge out of the water like this! I have definitely found my love of audio books and I have also found my preferred length and style of narration and genres. I look forward to a lot more listening next year!
Classics Challenge: COMPLETE
5 books (1 re-read) - While many of the classics that I read this year were shorter ones, I am happy to have dipped my toes back into the world of classics. It has rekindled my love a bit and I hope to read more again in 2019.
Series Challenge: COMPLETE
4 full series & 6 duologies - If you have been around for any amount of time (if not you will soon find out) I love to binge read series. I have a bad habit of purchasing an entire set of books before even reading one. This year I managed to read 9 series and 10 duologies (at least complete through 2018)! I really enjoyed focusing more on duologies this year but found myself still reverting to trilogies and longer series. Sometimes I want a large series, like with romance, and sometimes 3-5 books is necessary like in a lot of fantasy series. But I do find that I can really appreciate an author who can write a duology that concludes clearly and still feels satisfying to complete.

Requested Reviews:
No more than 25 - This was not really a challenge more of a tracking for me. I had said I wanted to accept no more than 25 books but I got an influx at the end of the year of some really great sounding books, and it did push me way to far. I still have several that I need to read and a couple of reviews still to write. I am going to have to be a lot pickier about the books that I say yes to, not that all of the books I receive emails about aren't fantastic sounding books but I just cannot put this much pressure on myself again.
TBR Challenge: COMPLETE
50-75 books that I already own as of 12/31/2017 - While I did complete this challenge with 54 books, I would have liked to see this number higher, I have so many fantastic books waiting on my shelves. As always with every reader, this is a continued battle with our TBR shelves!
As I read the books I purchase this year I will add a link (I will also note the month they were purchased/ read) - This was a challenge I really wanted to focus on this year. Last year 2017 I tracked the number of books I purchased and if I read them, in 2018 my goal was to be more aware of reading books as they came in. I think I did a much better job of this than I had in previous years but this certainly needs a lot of work. There is absolutely no reason I need to be adding over 200 books to my already overwhelmed shelves every year, especially when many of them end up being unhauled or DNFed anyway, or worse left unread. I am happy to say that of the 219 books that I added to my shelves this year (either through gifts, purchases, trades or book boxes) I have read 115 of them (over half) and unhauled 14 of them. 21 of those books were also purchases specifically for challenges in 2019. So that left only 69 books that should have been read in 2018 but weren't. That is much better than the 147 (I think) from 2017. My greatest weaknesses were of course the book subscription boxes, which I have worked extremely hard to read when they come in; and book festivals and events. I am fortunate to live in an area where there are several book events each year that I can attend and I often go overboard with purchases to be able to get them signed by the authors. So that will be my focus in the future, less books purchased in general, especially at events and via subscription boxes!

This has been quite a year! While I am sad to see 2018 end so quickly, I am excited to look forward to 2019 and all the potential it holds. I have learned a lot about myself this year with all of the extra tracking I have done and am I excited to put that information to use as I work to continue to improve my blog, my reading habits and myself personally.
How did you do with your 2018 challenges? Have you discovered anything about your reading habits this last year that you will put in use while planning 2019?
