Beginning Reader Review of Monsters One to Ten by Emily Thompson

Read for: Early Reader Challenge

Synopsis: "Learning to read is as easy (and fun) as one, two, three! (Reading Level Pre 1)"

My Review: This is a very basic counting book. It is listed as a pre-level 1 but I think it would be better suited as a children's picture book or board book. By the time you are looking at level reader books chances are your young one will be beyond this book. The one fun thing was all the familiar Sesame Street characters throughout the book, but again Munchkin was a little board with it (he is counting up to 30 now so 10 is not nearly challenging enough even with learning sight words).

My Rating: Unfortunately this book just wasn't for us, this book is more suited to board book/picture book readers.  We give it a rating of Two Paws.

  1. When I saw the cover, it looked liked a picture book to me. Why are they marketing this for young readers?

    1. I had picked this one up in the Target Dollar spot a while ago and was kind of surprised how young it is (and it seems, at least with Munchkin, Elmo had a very limited appeal period). I think it was originally released as a picture book but they re-released it as a level reader. On the Goodreads page you can see that it was originally a Golden Book featuring Ernie on the cover, a much more appropriate printing.
