I know this is a way off topic post here at Eastern Sunset Reads, but it is an important subject that needs more light shed on it and more people educated.
I request that all my readers take a moment to educate yourselves on the struggles of infertility. Chances are that you all know some one who has battled this disease, most of whom have or are still fighting their battle in silence.

Infertility effect about 1 in 8 couples according to a 2002 National Survey of Family Growth and unfortunately insurance often does not cover fertility treatments. According to Resolve.Org, only 15 states have passed laws requiring some level of coverage from insurance companies.
Resolve is a fantastic site and organization that assists those currently struggling with infertility and educates others. So please take some time to educate and support those struggling with this disease.

My cousin's wife had been trying to get pregnant again after having their first child for five years. I didn't even know they had been trying until they announced they were pregnant again. She just had the baby two days ago. I can't imagine how it feels to want to have a child and it never happens.
ReplyDeleteI am quite familiar with the evils of insurance and I swear if I could find a way to fix those problems I would. Insurances claim stuff like "this isn't medically necessary so we don't cover it" and it's a load of crap. Yeah, I can see stuff for VANITY not being covered. The problem with infertility is that insurances don't consider it a medical condition, AND they don't like the idea of plunking down $10,000+ for them for in vitro.
It's good that there are organizations out there designed to help people struggling with this. It is one of those things you don't think about until it happens to somebody close to you. Thanks for sharing!
I am glad to hear your cousin and his wife were able to have another child. Often friends and family never know when a couple is trying.
DeleteInsurance companies can be so difficult. Fertility treatments are often thought of as non-necessary medical treatments, which is a shame because it is a disease, one that little is known about. About 1/3 of infertility cases are termed "unexplained". It is not only a hardship to get a diagnosis of infertility but then to find your insurance company won't help you get the treatments you need.
