After Dark Review of Twice Tempted by a Rogue

I have added After Dark Reviews to my blog as a way of notifying you of a review of a book with Adult themes and scenes. From now on I will keep my reviews of all books I read that have explicit scenes in them for late night posts for those of you who prefer to avoid them or easy to find for those of you who seek them out ;)

Book #2 of the Stud Club Series
See my review of book one - One Dance with a Duke

Synopsis: "The daring members of the Stud Club are reckless gamblers and no strangers to risk—until love raises the stakes in Twice Tempted by a Rogue.

Luck is a double-edged sword for brooding war hero Rhys St. Maur. His death wish went unanswered on the battlefield, while fate allowed the murder of his good friend in the elite gentlemen’s society known as the Stud Club. Out of options, Rhys returns to his ancestral home on the moors of Devonshire, expecting anything but a chance at redemption in the arms of a beautiful innkeeper who dares him to take on the demons of his past—and the sweet temptation of a woman’s love.

Meredith Maddox believes in hard work, not fate, and romance isn’t part of her plan. But when Rhys returns, battle-scarred, world-weary, and more dangerously attractive than ever, the lovely widow is torn between determination and desire. As a deep mystery and dangerous smugglers threaten much more than their passionate reckoning, Meredith discovers that she must trust everything to a wager her heart placed long ago."

My Review: So I really loved the mystery that surrounded Rhys in the first Stud Club book and am so glad this one featured his story! Both main characters have so much of a back story and so much personality that they pull you right into the story and the little town. Meredith is such a strong woman and I love how she follows her head more than her heart. The sub-characters definitely take a back seat (except for a few), as well as the rest of the Stud Club characters, which is kind of a shame but it allows you to fully engulf yourself in the dynamics of the relationship between Rhys and Meredith.

My Rating: While I did fall madly in love with Rhys and really enjoyed Meredith, it wasn't a top book for me. It was a good, fun read, don't get me wrong but it wasn't as much as I wanted. I give it a rating of Three Paws.

Note: Very risque! Gets pretty hot & steamy!

After Dark Review of Thirty Nights with a Highland Husband by Melissa Mayhue

I have added After Dark Reviews to my blog as a way of notifying you of a review of a book with Adult themes and scenes. From now on I will keep my reviews of all books I read that have explicit scenes in them for late night posts for those of you who prefer to avoid them or easy to find for those of you who seek them out ;)

Synopsis: "SCOTLAND, 1272. Connor MacKiernan, a descendant of the Fae Prince, is a warrior who lives only for honor and duty. Though he's vowed never to marry, that's exactly what he must do to save his sister. Enter a little Faerie magic, and the search for a bride is on.
DENVER, 2007. Caitlyn Coryell is having a really bad day -- she just discovered her fiance with another woman Imagine her surprise when she puts on some sexy lingerie and an antique pendant and Connor appears in her bedroom, begging for her help. He offers a simple yet outrageous adventure: travel to his time, marry him, and return home.

But nothing's simple when Cate is trapped in the thirteenth century. The wedding's delayed, someone's trying to kill her, and in the middle of all this, she realizes she's falling in love with a man who can only be her husband for thirty nights."

My Review: I love this book, I read it a few years ago and enjoyed it so much I had to go buy the rest of the series. I just re-read it to get ready for the rest of the Daughters of the Glen books. The characters are great and you can help but fall in love with them. I am really interested in what Cate's family does, hope that is included in the rest of the series. So as you can tell even the sub-characters are great. The only thing that is stretching it a little is the fact that everyone seems to adjust to the time changes a little too easily, but its a minor thing when the rest of the story is moving along so well. I loved the ending as well, kind of surprises you a bit.

My Rating:  I so enjoyed this book, it was very hard not to take it to work and hide it under my desk. Its a great start to the series and I can't wait to read the rest of the books! I give it a rating of Four Paws and a Stump Wag!

Note: There is some explicit sex scenes in the book but can easily be skimmed over for those who prefer to avoid them.

Wednesday Writing

So Wednesday is my official writing update day. I have so many story projects going on and I need a push to get some done. So I will be trying to post each Wednesday about how my writing adventures are going (and I may need a swift kick in the pants by you guys sometimes).

Current Active Project:

The Last Mountains - 15,352
A equine shapeshifting family is being hunted to near extinction and the young new leader must go against all her lessons and approach the elite council for aide. Will they help her? How will she keep her family's traditions and values alive, let alone her herd?

Other Works in Progress:

The New Old Home - 17,193 words
Everyone dreams of winning the lottery, but what would you do with that money? That is the question presented to Natalie, when she is at the lowest point in her life, she is presented with an opportunity to make any normal person's dreams come true, but all those winnings can't give her what she wants most.

Tamlyn Marie's Grace - 12,072 words
Think Cinderella only with a matchmaker ;)

Princess Bs - 32,131 words
A story about a woman, recently divorced and returned to her home town to figure out what is next. She encounters an old friend and spends a weekend with him and his daughters. Feelings that are long since buried are rising up again, but are her recent loss and his current life going to stand in the way of their happily ever after?

Night Rider - 17,229
Alice is a recent high school graduate who is a very accomplished competitive rider in Hunter/Jumper, Dressage, and Western/Rodeo. Her parents had arranged for her to attend a private college on the east coast geared specifically to equine professions. However, Alice wants to focus on her studies in English Literature. When she arrives at the college she hides her riding abilities, but can she keep her talent and love of horses hidden?

Other Ideas Plotting:

Bloodsoar's Story
A pegasus struggles through life, ejected from the herd, near capture by humans.

The Assassin's Assassin
A student learns what the school is really teaching and sets out to destroy those who support the program.

Angel Story
Angels battle out an age old feud in a parallel world

Hurray I finally remembered to grab one of my stories to work on, I have changed the current project to Last Mountains since its one that I have been handwriting and then typing.  I read through what I had and made some minor grammatical and spelling corrections.  It is very inspiring and exciting to see what I already had down and the plans on where I want to take the story.  Hopefully by next week I will be able to update the word count!!!

I have also decided that Tamlyn Marie's Grace will most like end up just a short story, so when I need a break from Last Mountain's I can maybe bring this one to an end.

I have set a goal of finishing at least Tamlyn Marie's Grace and possibly one other before the end of August!

On a side personal note - start practicing with the new feather pen!

Happy Writing to you all!!

Meet Me on Monday

So I found this fun little meme I thought would be great to add so people get to know me a little better (and discover my strange little quirks). Meet Me On Monday is hosted by Acting Balanced where 5 questions are posted each week for us to answer about ourselves and share with all of our readers.

Acting Balanced

And now for this weeks Questions:
1. Finish this sentence - The last book I read and enjoyed was....
                                              I generally enjoy most books I read so I guess the better answer would be what book surprised me and that would have to be Undone & Unknown by Rachel Caine. I didn't expect to like those books as much as I have been.

2. Do you have special Victoria Day (Canadian) or Memorial Day (US) traditions? If you don't live in Canada or the US, what is the next holiday that you are celebrating where you are?

                                      I don't really have any set traditions, generally Memorial Day is filled with BBQs with friends and fireworks in the evening.  This year though hubby is going to be gone so I might work on projects at the house and maybe weed the flower gardens.
3. If you could invent something to make your life simpler, what would it be?
                                     Self cleaning floors! I swear no matter how many days a week I sweep the floors I can't seem to get all the dog and cat hair up, every time I think I am done another fur bunny blows across my path.
4. What is your favorite recent blog post?

                                    Blog post of mine? umm not sure, I guess I thought the Bitterblue review was interesting, can't sa
y that I have a favorite blog post though

Review of Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore

Synopsis: "Eight years after Graceling, Bitterblue is now queen of Monsea. But the influence of her father, a violent psychopath with mind-altering abilities, lives on. Her advisors, who have run things since Leck died, believe in a forward-thinking plan: Pardon all who committed terrible acts under Leck’s reign, and forget anything bad ever happened. But when Bitterblue begins sneaking outside the castle—disguised and alone—to walk the streets of her own city, she starts realizing that the kingdom has been under the thirty-five-year spell of a madman, and the only way to move forward is to revisit the past.

Two thieves, who only steal what has already been stolen, change her life forever. They hold a key to the truth of Leck’s reign. And one of them, with an extreme skill called a Grace that he hasn’t yet identified, holds a key to her heart."

My Review: Well hmmm, its hard to decide what to say about Bitterblue. It definitely won't be to everyone's liking. You will spend a good portion of the book as confused as Bitterblue, but what else should you expect when visiting a kingdom that was run by a mind altering mad man for years. I think it shows Kristin Cashore's talent for writing when you can feel so much a part of the story. I also think she has a fantastic talent for characters, each is so individual, has their own history and their own story line within the book. You also can't tell who is the "good" and who is the "bad" people. She also does a great job of making sure to bring all three books together in this final book of the trilogy. Bitterblue is a character that I have grown to love, she has such strength and determination, she could easily sit back and let things happen in her kingdom but she decides to take a more difficult and active role as queen. But of all the new characters in this book I have to say that I fell in love with Death, maybe its the book lover in me or maybe its the cat lover or maybe something different all together but I adore Death! All in all I thought it was a great story, difficult to take and confusing to muddle through but worth it in every way.

My Rating: As I said above, this book is not for everyone, its not a simple, easy, happy or romantic book that many YA readers enjoy.  As a HUGE Kristin Cashore fan I anxiously awaited this book for a few years and was not disappointed.  It was written more in the style of Fire, which is my favorite of the trilogy so I clicked with the book just fine.  I give it rating of Four Paws.

So it's been a few weeks since I posted a Wednesday Writing due the the fact that I am training my replacement (well cover) in the office and have limited time on the computer.  But the good news is that I will be able to work on some of my hand written stories while she is learning (I just have to remember to grab them in the morning HAHAHA I am sooo not a morning person).  Oh which reminds me I need to jot down that really weird dream I had last night, could make for a really different story!

Hope you all have a great Wednesday full of inspiration!

And now for this weeks Questions:
1. Finish this sentence - The best thing about this past weekend was...
                                            Having the hubby back home after a few days away.
2. When company drops by unexpectedly what do you serve?

                                            Gosh is company ever expected? It seems like our door is always swinging open unexpectedly. Usually we let guests serve themselves, but if they are staying for dinner we can run to the market (only a block away) or pull something out of the freezer, or sometimes I can convince hubby to make a delicious pasta dish.
3. How old were you when you got your first cell phone?
                                            Umm 20ish maybe? I grew up in an area where cell phones don't work and didn't get one until Hubby gave me one for christmas.
4. Where do you blog?
                                          Here, obviously LOL!

And Number 5 is for you to answer -  If you have inside plans for a weekend but it ends up being beautiful outside do you change your plans?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wow another weekend that absolutely flew by, gosh we really need to add a day to them don't we?!  It was so busy but I have nothing to show for it other than my first sunburn of the season haha! Since Hubby came home we had a lot to do this weekend, including restocking our fridge and freezer, taking Niko for a walk and of course stopping to get some Del's (a special summer treat here in RI).  We also drove up to MA for an adoption event for Niko's rescue. It was great to be able to meet the local foster mom and support the rescue.
Hope you all had a great weekend and have a fun week!
After Dark Review of One Dance with a Duke by Tessa Dare
I have added After Dark Reviews to my blog as a way of notifying you of a review of a book with Adult themes and scenes. From now on I will keep my reviews of all books I read that have explicit scenes in them for late night posts for those of you who prefer to avoid them or easy to find for those of you who seek them out ;)
Synopsis: "A handsome and reclusive horse breeder, Spencer Dumarque, the fourth Duke of Morland, is a member of the exclusive Stud Club, an organization so select it has only ten members—yet membership is attainable to anyone with luck. And Spencer has plenty of it, along with an obsession with a prize horse, a dark secret, and, now, a reputation as the dashing “Duke of Midnight.” Each evening he selects one lady for a breathtaking midnight waltz. But none of the women catch his interest, and nobody ever bests the duke—until Lady Amelia d’Orsay tries her luck.
In a moment of desperation, the unconventional beauty claims the duke’s dance and unwittingly steals his heart. When Amelia demands that Spencer forgive her scapegrace brother’s debts, she never imagines that her game of wits and words will lead to breathless passion and a steamy proposal. Still, Spencer is a man of mystery, perhaps connected to the shocking murder of the Stud Club’s founder. Will Amelia lose her heart in this reckless wager or win everlasting love?"
My Review: Tessa Dare is quickly becoming one of my favorite historical romance authors! I loved One Dance with a Duke! The characters and story line are fantastic. I absolutely love Amelia, gone from a quiet, near spinster on the outskirts of society to a bold, confident, demanding and outspoken woman. I love how she gives up waiting for things to happen and takes control of her life. Then there is Spencer *swoons* oh Spencer. A tough, cold and mysterious Duke that has so many secrets to be uncovered. Even the sub characters are much to be loved, Lily, Jack, Claudia, Rhys & even Bellamy add so much to the story. I can't wait to read the next book in the trilogy!
My Rating: I really didn't want to put this book down at any time and have already downloaded the second book in the trilogy so how can I give it any other rating than Four Paws?!
After Dark Review of The Bear and The Bride by Jianne Carlo
I have added After Dark Reviews to my blog as a way of notifying you of a review of a book with Adult themes and scenes. From now on I will keep my reviews of all books I read that have explicit scenes in them for late night posts for those of you who prefer to avoid them or easy to find for those of you who seek them out ;)
Synopsis: "Jarl Torsten glimpses Ainslin of Durham, a recent widow with two sons, and immediately covets her for his wife. He outmaneuvers his rival, Ainslin’s neighbor Earl Sigrid, and receives the king’s blessing to marry her.
Ainslin fears Torsten reaction when he discovers she’s a virgin. How to explain her maidenhead and twin sons?
Her worst nightmares are realized when Earl Sigrid arrives in Norway for King Cnut’s coronation. What does he suspect? Will Torsten cast Ainslin and the boys aside when he discovers the truth?"
My Review: I saw a review of this on Pedantic Phooka book blogger's page and loved the idea. The characters are fantastic! I loved each of them, I just wish there was more story development. There were a lot of great story plot ideas that could have extended the book but they were all cut short and resolved without any major conflicts. However if you are looking for a hot steamy book to read in one night, this is it!
My Rating: While I wish there was more story to this one, the characters were great and it was exactly what I was looking to read at the time. I give it a rating of Three Paws.
Note: Explicit scenes and a lot of them
After Dark Review of Once Upon a Winter's Eve by Tessa Dare
I have added After Dark Reviews to my blog as a way of notifying you of a review of a book with Adult themes and scenes. From now on I will keep my reviews of all books I read that have explicit scenes in them for late night posts for those of you who prefer to avoid them or easy to find for those of you who seek them out ;)
Synopsis: "Violet Winterbottom is a quiet girl. She speaks six languages, but seldom raises her voice. She endured bitter heartbreak in perfect silence. The gentlemen aren't beating down her door.
Until the night of the Spindle Cove Christmas ball, when a mysterious stranger crashes into the ballroom and collapses at Violet's feet. His coarse attire and near-criminal good looks would put any sensible young lady on her guard. He's wet, chilled, bleeding, and speaking in an unfamiliar tongue.
Only Violet understands him. And she knows he's not what he seems.
She has one night to draw forth the secrets of this dangerously handsome rogue. Is he a smuggler? A fugitive? An enemy spy? She needs answers by sunrise, but her captive would rather seduce than confess. To learn his secrets, Violet must reveal hers—and open herself to adventure, passion, and the unthinkable... Love."
My Review: Loved it! Violet is such a fantastic character, she acted as one should expect she should act, with hesitation. I love how intelligent the characters are. The play with languages is entertaining and added a fun almost secret element to the story, it was really as if you were spying on Violet and the gentleman. The ending was great, loved it (you'll just have to read it to find out what happens). The only issue I have is that I want more!!
My Rating: as I said, I want more of the characters! I really didn't want to stop reading at any point so I give it a rating of Four Paws!
Review of For Camelot's Honor by Sarah Zettel
Synopsis:"Set in Arthurian England, FOR CAMELOT'S HONOR is the follow-up to "IN CAMELOT'S SHADOW (LUNA, 3/04) and is based on the epic "Geraint and Enid from the "Mabinogion. Elen, the daughter of a Welsh chieftain, believed that nothing could withstand her retribution against her family's killer. But the evil sorceress Morgaine had other plans--an elaborate plan to cause Elen to betray all she held dear, including her new ally, the High King. Still holding fast to hope, facing deadly foes seen and unseen, Elen traveled through the wild mountains to find a magical weapon to strike down the sorceress. Sir Geraint, her only companion, would risk life and love to complete their quest--but never honor. Would Elen, too, choose honor and the future over revenge and a shattered past?"
My Review: Another fantastic Arthurian romance! Of all the brothers I would pick Geraint as my hubby, he is so quite, intelligent and honorable. This book took on an even more magical story, literally, it is littered with magic and curses for Elen and Geraint to wade through and correct. The curse laid upon Elen is one of the worst I could imagine, but she quickly figures out the loop holes Morgaine didn't close. Elen is very observant and determined to avenge her family and reclaim her lands, but she requires help from some very powerful beings to achieve her goals.
My Rating:  Another of my favorite books from one of my favorite series. The characters were great and while the story got magical and seemed to go a little of course for an Arthurian Legend, it was still a great book! I give it a rating of Four Paws!
And now for this weeks Questions:
1. Finish this sentence - The chore that I hate most is...
                        That's a tough question, it probably changes each time I do the chores. I dislike cleaning the bathroom, I dislike putting clean clothes away (don't mind doing laundry or folding just putting them away), but I really hate cooking!! It's a good thing I married an Italian ;)
2. What are you most looking forward to this summer?
                    Um that's a secret for now ;)
3. Where do you do most of your grocery shopping? How often do you shop?
                    Oh gosh I should have put this in question number 1!!! I really really hate shopping! Grocery shopping, gift shopping, clothes shopping . . . I hate them all (except book shopping of course lol).  I shop at several stores, Walmart or Target for cleaning supplies and non perishables, some groceries at Stop and Shop and produce & meats at Dave's Market.
4. Why do you blog?
                         Because I love books! I want to share my love of reading and hopefully bring books that someone hasn't read into the light and give them a new fun adventure.
Number 5 is for you to answer.  What is your favorite summer time meal and beverage?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wow, another totally insane week and weekend!! I fall in love with my new bathroom more every day. Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like any more work will be getting done this month as Hubby has to take an emergency trip to Florida this weekend and then he is going to DC over Memorial Day weekend :(
Oh well I guess I have plenty of pony projects to finish and some book shelving to do in the mean time!!
Hope you all have a great week filled with new adventures!

Review of Unknown by Rachel Caine

Synopsis: "Living among mortals, the djinn Cassiel has developed a reluctant affection for them—especially for Warden Luis Rocha. As the mystery deepens around the kidnapping of innocent Warden children, Cassiel and Luis are the only ones who can investigate both the human and djinn realms. But the trail will lead them to a traitor who may be more powerful than they can handle..."

My Review: Just as exciting if not more so than the first book in the series! Now that I have become comfortable with the types of creatures and powers each holds in the book, I can really settle into the story. I love the tension that Caine creates not only drama and climax wise but the tension on all levels between the characters. Cassiel is still the ultimate bad ass heroine! Love her and I really love seeing her experience human things for the first time (alcohol was the best). I also really enjoyed trying to figure out along with Cassiel and Luis as to who to trust and for how long to trust them. So much going on but you never loose track of the plot line.

My Rating: I loved this book and am totally in love with the series, again I have already downloaded the next book! I give Unknown a rating of Four Paws.
