So reading will slow way down this month as I put my energy into finally winning Nanowrimo! I am going to try to finish Sabriel tonight while passing out candy, kind of an appropriate Halloween book don't you think? I will try to get the Bedtime Stories going again since they are easy reads and maybe when I need a break finish reading the Middle Reader Challenge.

 

Review of Obernewtyn by Isobelle Carmondy

Synopsis: "In a world struggling back from the brink of apocalypse, life is harsh. And for Elspeth Gordie, it is also dangerous. My Review: This one was okay, didn't really suck me in or connect me with the characters. I think that this book was a lot of world building, background information and planning. It didn't really get good or exciting until the last 2 or 3 chapters. I am sure that now all the ground work is done the rest of the series will pick up pace, but this was a little too much info dump in one book with not enough excitement or action. The characters didn't jump out at me, they all seemed average even though they had misfit skills. I didn't feel bad when bad things happened or happy when good things happened. I did start to like Rushton towards the end, so hopefully the characters develop more of a personality in the next book.        

My Rating: Unfortunately I have to give this one a rating of Two Paws. It didn't capture my interested, but I will continue the series since it comes so highly recommended by a fellow book blogger ;)

My Review: So this one came on recommendation from my parents, apparently the author went to high school with my father and they ran into each other at a reunion. This one started off kind of slow and confusing. But once the council and the different species were explained to Bailey things became a lot more clear and you could really dive into the book head first. I loved the suspense and the danger in the books, you know how close the danger is but the characters don't and the feel of that tension is fantastic. I loved the idea of sirens, it was an interesting take on the paranormal. I didn't really get too attached to the characters but I was rooting for them, I do really like Rafe and hope he is in the next book! I also really liked how the sex scenes didn't take over the book or distract from the story line.

My Rating: I think this one earns a solid Three Paws and I look forward to reading the next book in the trilogy.

So Wednesday is my official writing update day. I have so many story projects going on and I need a push to get some done. So I will be trying to post each Wednesday about how my writing adventures are going (and I may need a swift kick in the pants by you guys sometimes).

Everyone dreams of winning the lottery, but what would you do with that money? That is the question presented to Natalie, when she is at the lowest point in her life, she is presented with an opportunity to make any normal person's dreams come true, but all those winnings can't give her what she wants most.

A story about a woman, recently divorced and returned to her home town to figure out what is next. She encounters an old friend and spends a weekend with him and his daughters. Feelings that are long since buried are rising up again, but are her recent loss and his current life going to stand in the way of their happily ever after?

Tamlyn Marie's Grace - 12,072 words

Think Cinderella only with a matchmaker ;)

The Last Mountains - 15,352

A equine shapeshifting family is being hunted to near extinction and the young new leader must go against all her lessons and approach the elite council for aide. Will they help her? How will she keep her family's traditions and values alive, let alone her herd?

Night Rider - 17,229

Alice is a recent high school graduate who is a very accomplished competitive rider in Hunter/Jumper, Dressage, and Western/Rodeo. Her parents had arranged for her to attend a private college on the east coast geared specifically to equine professions. However, Alice wants to focus on her studies in English Literature. When she arrives at the college she hides her riding abilities, but can she keep her talent and love of horses hidden?

So I still don't have any writing done because I am waiting for that ever important November 1st date! I can't wait! I have 10 chapters outlined and a bunch of research done, still plenty more to do but it should get me well over half way through the book.  So by next Wednesday you should see my word count increasing quickly!!  Good luck to all the other Nano participants this year!

Yummmmy! Love love love the cover! As a confessed in the last After Dark review I have this thing for back and shoulders, and this cover really plays into that!

Synopsis: "I was raised for battle. And as the first daughter of a warrior family, I've earned my reputation the hard way. Yet now I fight alongside uncivilized male Northland dragons who think a female is only good for breeding and waiting back home in the cave. But it's the foolish and foolhardy who would try to stop me, Rhona the Fearless, from doing what I do best—destroying the enemies of my kind.

So the smartest thing wily barbarian Vigholf the Abhorrent can do for me is stay out of my way as we risk all on a deadly mission in enemy territory. I don't care if he's fascinated by me, even though he is as attractive as he is resourceful. He's having far too much fun putting me in difficult situations and testing my sense of duty to the limit. And I'm going to enjoy challenging his insufferable confidence, outwitting his schemes, and making him surrender in the wildest ways. . ."

My Rating: I really enjoyed this one, a great follow up to the Last Dragon Standing. It wasn't exactly what I expected, I love the fact that the some time had passed between the last book and this one and that we didn't have to read through a five year war before getting to this book. I adore the characters in this one, Vigholf and Rhona are such a match. I adore the children, they crack me up and I can't wait to read more about them as the grow up. I feel like Izzy's character took a little bit of a hit in this one, she is just becoming too similar to Annwyl. The story line was great, had you gasping at times in horror and other times in relief. I really can't wait to see what book comes next!

My Rating: This as a Four Paw book for me. I loved the pace, it really picked up from the previous book in the series.

I am working in the poetry section of my own 2011 Reading Challenge. I had planned on posting the poems for you to join me in reflecting on them; however, I am not entirely certain on the copyright laws regarding some of the poets we will read. A brilliant poem to give us all something to strive towards. If only we could take on every trait and strength mentioned by Rudyard Kipling. I really hope several graduations use this as their motto because there is a lot of wisdom that will be needed written here. I also think that as adults that are pushed around in the working world that we need to read this and remind ourselves what we should actually be striving for in our lives.

My Review: I admit, not my favorite book of the series, but it was still entertaining. It felt like a book to gear up to the next, there is no real conclusion. I am less of a fan of Keita than Gwenvael, but I adore Ragnar! We also met a new character, Ren, not really sure what to think of him. Of course we still got some time with all the other previous characters and I still absolutely love Eibhear! The babies have me very curious, wondering what they are planning and how they will turn out. While this wasn't my favorite book, it still leads me to read the next one!        

My Rating: I was actually able to put this one down over an entire weekend so I give it a rating of Two Paws.

Writing Wednesday

So Wednesday is my official writing update day. I have so many story projects going on and I need a push to get some done. So I will be trying to post each Wednesday about how my writing adventures are going (and I may need a swift kick in the pants by you guys sometimes).

Everyone dreams of winning the lottery, but what would you do with that money? That is the question presented to Natalie, when she is at the lowest point in her life, she is presented with an opportunity to make any normal person's dreams come true, but all those winnings can't give her what she wants most.

So again no new writing done but more outlines and plotting done for the upcoming Nano book! I have gotten several chapters outlined and only plan to do a few more, getting towards the end I don't like too much planning so I can let the story go where it wants to go.  I have also done some research, I wasn't planning on getting facts down until after nano and go back and edit, but I had a little time. So research on names, lottery, taxes are all done and I picked up several books at Barnes and Noble last night to begin researching castles and manors!  I just wish I had a laptop to take to write ins so I didn't have to hand write, I think the story would really fly if I could just type like crazy!

I am also starting to work on a Nano 2011 soundtrack, I could use some help since I can't seem to come up with songs that I need.

I need sad songs - for grave site and memories

I need celtic and scottish music for traveling too.

I love this poem, the rhyme and meter are what you would expect in a poem. I also love how he is talking about a dark haired simple beauty as opposed to the gaudiness of others. I love the comparison between the woman and night, how the smallest light from a star stands out against the darkness when in day the light is overwhelming and common. I am thrilled to have a poem for us dark haired girls :) This is a very beautiful poem and probably one of my favorite love poems!

 

Book Club Book Review: Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

Synopsis: "As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children who once lived here—one of whom was his own grandfather—were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a desolate island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive."

My Review: Well that was interesting! Not at all what I expected. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one but I wasn't sucked in like I normally am use to. I don't know if it was the 1st person point of view, the characters or the sci-fi aspect that didn't quite click with me. The only character I did connect with was the Grandfather, I absolutely adored him! This was a unique adventure with time travel and some unusual abilities. I did enjoy how each one had a single talent. Though I am not happy with Jacob's final decision, the ending definitely set up for many more books in the future. The really great part about the book were the unusual photos that were included, it really set the book apart and added to the believability of the whole story.

My Rating: I really am not sure what to give this one, it was unusual, interesting and completely unexpected which gets major props, but due to the lack of character connection and the pacing it fell a little for me.  So I think I give this one a rating of Three Paws.

Rhodie Reader Thoughts: I think the overall consensus was that this was a really good book. It caught us all off guard and was so different from many of the other books we have read. A few of us did find it to be a little predictable (ie. who the bad guy is) but were surprised by other events that occurred. We also all agreed on the fact that the pacing was a little off but came to the conclusion that it may have been due to trying to get all the background details and characters prepared for the next book, which we hope will pick up pace and suck us in. None of us were very happy with Jacob's final decision or the ending. Most of us plan to read the next one when it is released.

So we had our first real book club meeting on Friday, unfortunately not too many people showed up but it was still fun! I will post some comments on my review of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.

 

 

Sadly, I missed the Boston Book Festival on Saturday :( I came down with a nasty cold last week and was just starting to recover on Friday and Saturday, so I stayed home.

After Dark Review of What a Dragon Should Know by G.A. Aiken

My Review: By far my favorite of the series so far! I absolutely love Dagmar! She was a brilliant change from the hardened warrior women/ assassins of the previous two books. Dagmar's character was well developed and so interesting with her calm unassuming look and yet a ever working mind behind. I also began to like Gwenvael a little more, he is still not near my favorite of the brothers but I do like him better than I did before. The story line was very interesting as well, a great continuation from previous events, yet still unexpected.        

My Rating: Because of the quirky characters and the different plot line I give this one a rating of Four Paws!

After Dark Review of About A Dragon by G.A. Aiken

This one has a human form to die for, and knows it.According to dragon law, Talaith is now his property, for pleasure...Or otherwise. But if Lord Arrogance thinks she's the kind of damsel to acquiesce without a word, he's in for a surprise...Is the woman never silent? Briec the Mighty knew the moment he laid eyes on Talaith that she would be his, but he'd counted on tongue-lashings of an altogether different sort. It's embarrassing, really, that it isn't this outspoken female's magicks that have the realm's greatest dragon in her thrall. No, Briec has been spellbound by something altogether different - and if he doesn't tread carefully, what he doesn't know about human women could well be the undoing of his entire race...

My Review: About a Dragon was even more entertaining than the first book in the series. I love the arguing and the banter between Talaith and Briec. But truth be told I fell in loved with Eibhear even though he was a sub character in development for later in the series. It was definitely an interesting turn of events to involve the gods and add some conflict, and there is some definite foreshadowing to more danger and adventures for more books!

My Rating: A great follow up to Dragon Actually, and leads me to the next books in the series without hesitation. I give it a rating of Three Paws and Stump Wag!

My Review: A fantastic start to a series! I love Annwyl's brutalness, talk about your ultimate heroine and strong woman character. I really enjoyed the story line and how everything plays out, you know whats coming but you don't know until it happens how it will play out. It is also a fun change from the more used wolf and cat shapeshifter paranormal books, the dragons and the fantasy elements are great. Like I said its a great start to a series and I look forward to reading more books in the series.

My Rating: I love dragons, and dragons who turn into smoking hot knights, Oh My! I give this book a rating of Three Paws and a Stump Wag!

My Review: Sooo much better than the Pride #1 book! It felt like it had a much more developed plot and characters. I absolutely love Jess, she reminds me of the geeky girl I hide sometimes too. I love the whole Wild Dog pack, all the sub characters were fantastic. Bobby Ray is such a sweetie, though a little dense at times. I really can't wait to read the next ones in this series, I hope they bring in more of Smitty and Jess and I can't wait to see what happens with Mitch!        

My Rating: This was a fun one to read and I really couldn't put it down so it gets a rating of Four Paws!

My Review: This one was ok for me. Not my favorite by Shelly Laurenston but still good. The first story with Dez and Mace was a little too physical for even me, it felt like it had very little story line to it until the end when Dez actually gets to be the bad ass cop hero she is. I didn't really connect with any of the characters, except maybe Dez a little bit but not enough that I care for her. The second story was definiately an improvement. The comedy element was great and I fell for Shaw and Mitch, even though he played such a small part, definitely stole a little piece of my heart. I really connected with and enjoyed this second story more and look forward to following Ronnie, Shaw, Shaw's cubs and Mitch in future stories.        

My Rating: I give this one Two Paws and A Stump Wag. The two stories really saved the rating on this one, based on the first it would have gotten a lower rating but I enjoyed the second one enough to raise the rating.

Now I feel like I need to share one of my many obsessions with you all to explain my lack of reading and posting. 

Sooo here goes nothing, I confess I am addicted to

ProFootball!!

Football has been an obsession of mine for as long as I can remember and it literally takes over my life ever fall and winter.  I compete with my family in picks each week as well as manage a fantasy team.  So not only is my entire Sunday spent in front of the TV eating wings and my Monday nights as well but hours upon hours of research, stats and adjustments to my team.  So there you have it, the reason I am not around nearly as often or getting as much reading done (hence the massive reading in the summer).
